AirPods 4 with ANC vs. the $129 Model — Is Noise Cancellation Worth $50 More?

I'll be upfront: I almost bought the cheaper $129 AirPods 4 instead. Apple sells two versions of the same earbuds $50 apart, and the only real difference on paper is Active Noise Cancellation. After actually living with the ANC version for a while, I can tell you whether that $50 is worth it — spoiler, for me it was.

First Impressions

Right out of the box, the fit and style immediately stood out. These have the redesigned shorter stem, and they sit in my ears more securely than older AirPods models I've tried. No uncomfortable pressure, no falling out during a walk or workout — just a genuinely good, all-day fit.

Sound Quality and Noise Cancellation

The sound is excellent for earbuds at this price point — clear, full, and noticeably better than I expected from an open-fit design with no silicone ear tips. What actually sold me, though, is the noise cancellation. I wasn't sure an earbud without a sealed tip could meaningfully block outside noise, but it does a legitimately good job cutting down background sound without making everything feel unnaturally muffled.

Setup, Connectivity, and the Case

Pairing was seamless — open the case near an iPhone, and the on-screen setup pop-up appears instantly, just like Apple's other wireless accessories. Wireless connectivity has worked perfectly for me with zero dropouts so far, whether I'm at my desk, walking around, or in a different room from my phone.

The case itself is compact, charges over USB-C, and also supports wireless charging — a nice touch if you're already set up with a charging pad. I also like the color and overall build quality; it doesn't feel like a corner was cut anywhere.

Battery Life

Battery life has been very good — easily enough to get through a full day of regular use between music, calls, and video without needing to top up mid-afternoon. Range has also been exactly what I'd expect, with no unexpected disconnects moving around the house.

So — Is the $50 Upgrade Worth It?

For me, yes. If you spend real time in noisy environments — commuting, open offices, flights — the Active Noise Cancellation genuinely changes the listening experience, and it's not a gimmick tacked onto the spec sheet. If you mostly listen at home or in quiet spaces, the base $129 model will probably do the job fine and save you the extra money. But if noise cancellation matters to you at all, I don't think you'll regret paying up for this version.
