JBL Go 4 — Ultra-Portable IP67 Speaker with Auracast

5.2 ★★★☆☆ / 10 — JaveomoTech Score

The JBL Go 4 sounds great, feels premium, and looks stunning. It's also the first JBL product I've tested where the battery performance genuinely let me down — and for a portable speaker, that's the one thing it can't afford to get wrong. Great hardware, real reliability concerns.

📝 Full Review

Let's Talk About What's Good First

Because there is genuinely a lot good about the JBL Go 4. The sound quality is excellent for the size — punchy bass, clear mids, and a volume ceiling that surprises you every time. The IP67 rating is the best waterproofing you'll find on an ultra-portable speaker, covering dust as well as water. The build feels premium, the design is one of the nicest in this category, and the Auracast speaker pairing is a clever feature that actually works. If this review was just about the audio and build, it would be a 9/10.

The Sound Is Legitimately Great

Multiple reviewers — including one who owns Bose, Sony, Polk, Yamaha, and B&O speakers — say the Go 4 holds its own against far more expensive competition at moderate volumes. For its size, the bass depth and overall clarity are genuinely impressive. This part of the product is not in dispute.

Compact and well-presented in the box — it looks and feels like a premium product.

Now for the Problem

🔋

Battery Life Falls Well Short of 7 Hours

Multiple independent reviewers tested the battery at around 60% volume and measured under 4 hours — not the advertised 7. One reviewer exchanged the unit and the replacement measured almost identically. Others report the speaker randomly shutting itself off even when charged, and auto-powering down after just 10 minutes of audio pause. For a portable speaker, battery reliability is the single most important spec. The Go 4 fails it.

JBL Go 4 size demonstration

Ultra-compact size — genuinely pocketable. The hardware is great. The battery behaviour is the issue.

The 10-Minute Auto-Shutoff Problem

This is a separate issue from raw battery life and it's arguably more frustrating for daily use. The Go 4 powers itself down after roughly 10 minutes of silence — meaning if you pause your music to watch something else, you come back to a dead speaker that needs to be manually restarted and re-paired. The feature exists to save battery, which is understandable, but 10 minutes is too aggressive for real-world use. There's no way to adjust or disable this in settings.

Beautiful up close — the grille design and build quality are genuinely premium.

Who Is This For?

If you're looking for the best-sounding ultra-portable speaker and you'll always be within reach of a charger — or you only need it for short bursts — the Go 4 is genuinely impressive. If you want a speaker for an all-day camping trip, a beach day, or a long commute where you can't babysit the charge level, the battery situation makes it a risky choice at this price point. The Soundcore 2 costs less, lasts 24 hours, and is equally waterproof. That's a hard comparison for the Go 4 to win on paper.

💡

Consider the Anker Soundcore 2 Instead

If battery life matters to you — and for a portable speaker it should — the Anker Soundcore 2 is $29.98, lasts 24 hours, is IPX7 waterproof, and scored 9.5/10 in our review. The Go 4 sounds marginally better at the top end, but the Soundcore 2 is the more reliable everyday speaker at a lower price.
